What is a safety certificate?

A Safety Certificate (also known as a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)) offers buyers of vehicles better protection and peace of mind by covering basic safety components of a vehicle being offered for sale or being re-registered. The safety inspection only covers minimal safety standards and should not replace a full mechanical inspection of the vehicle. A Safety Certificate covers basic things that can affect the safe operation of the vehicle, such as:

  • tyres
  • brakes
  • steering
  • suspension
  • body rust or damage
  • windscreen
  • lights

When is a safety certificate needed?

A safety certificate is needed in Queensland when:

  • Re-registering an unregistered vehicle
  • Offering a registered light vehicle for sale in Queensland
  • Transferring registration to a new owner
  • Transferring to Queensland registration from another state or territory

Note: When you offer a vehicle for sale, you must have a Safety Certificate, and this includes listing the vehicle online, placing the vehicle in a public place offering it for sale or driving around with a sign in the window such as “interested? Ph 1234 5678” or “Buy Me Ph 1234 5678.”
